Thus, for better management in nursing, the group formation process has been adopted to ensure positive outcomes in the nursing sector. The group process aims to provide an understanding of the relationships within the nursing teams. The process offers a framework for nursing management interventions to the nursing teams based on a particular managing perspective. The theoretical framework of the group process theory provides the understanding the team members need to take as well as the coordinators to ensure positive outcomes. Stages of group formation According to (Manges, 2017), the stages of group development involves for stages, i.e., forming, storming, norming, and performing. The first stage often includes coming together and developing goals t hat they plan to achieve. At this point, members havent formed strong relationships. The storming phase then follows. At this stage, every member of the group often storms in with different ideas on how to achieve the set goals. Often, there are high chances of member disagreements as well as competition for roles within the team. The members get to learn each others behavior which will become a norm in the team. After the storming stage, the process enters the norming stage. At this stage, the members realize that they have to have an agreement to achieve the set team goals. The norming stage is thus characterized by the creation of interpersonal relations, and cohesion. The last stage is the performing stage. This group often depends on the outcomes from the norming stage. For instance, if the members reach an agreement to work together in the norming stage, then the performing stage will be characterized by interdependence and increased trust within the group leading to positive outcomes. Strategies for facilitating group process The healthcare profession is often creating a context for productive group interactions for improved patient outcomes. Based on early research in the area, it has been concluded that nursing groups have led to improved job satisfaction, improved patient care, and a reduction in healthcare costs (Marquis, 2015). Teamwork in the nursing profession comes with various benefits thus needs to be embraced. Thus, an effective group process facilitation requires; Goal setting and planning Every successful nursing team requires members to agree upon particular targets and plans to achieve set targets or goals. A group that has successfully gone through the formation stages should also have members assigned to specific roles to ensure success.
